Biological Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Treatment

Some VOCs can be effectively treated using biological digestion. ERG has experience making use of bacteria for VOC treatment in a variety of different plant configurations. A selection of examples include:

  • At a printing ink manufacturing facility, ERG’s scrubber provides effective VOC treatment by a novel biological process. The printing inks fumes (VOCs and pigment particulate) are captured in a water scrubber and the scrub liquor is then treated by an aerobic digester able to handle the liquor throughput and solids loading. The treated liquor is sprayed back into the scrubber in a closed circuit. The only effluent is a biological sludge removed from the digester tank.
  • Bio-trickling filters used for VOC treatment from pharmaceutical facility tank farms. ERG has successfully carried out two similar projects to upgrade the existing bio-trickling filters to operate more efficiently with direct VOC removal and digestion, and introduced a carbon filter downstream of the biofilter to achieve the stack discharge limit required.
  • Numerous odour control applications use biofilters to treat the odorous air, which typically includes VFAs (volatile fatty acids), ketones, alcohols, ethers and esters. See our Odour Control pages for more information.
